As one of the oldest landscapes in Austria, the Wachau was declared a protected landscape back in 1955 and was awarded the European Nature Conservation Diploma in 1994.

In December 2000, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This honoured a cultural landscape in which people have settled for thousands of years.
